Social media is an integral part of youth culture. It helps them form communities and stay connected to friends who live far away.

Instagram in particular is especially problematic in this regard, featuring an overwhelming focus on beauty and fitness influencers who often appear perfect in every way.

Instagram can be awash in fitness influencers, gifs and other visual content. Scrolling through your feed gives you an insight into other people’s lives which may cause feelings of jealousy or anxiety.

Twitter is another popular platform that can have a detrimental effect on your mental health. Here, you’ll find out the latest gossip, politics and what’s wrong with other people. Twitter offers an outlet for sharing both positive and negative experiences.

Facebook can be an excellent platform for sharing news, photos and other updates; however, it also serves as a window into the most negative aspects of your friends. A study revealed that college students who spend too much time on Facebook were significantly more likely to suffer from severe depression and anxiety than those who don’t.

If you’re feeling anxious and depressed, don’t go on social media right away – it will only make matters worse. Instead, take a break to do something else or reach out to a friend who can offer support and encouragement.

The more confident you feel in yourself, the less time you’ll spend on it. Limiting your use to 30 minutes daily can be an effective strategy; however, this doesn’t have to mean stopping altogether – simply reduce its usage and prioritize other activities such as reading or exercising instead.

Don’t post personal information online and don’t engage in cyberbullying or other forms of cyber-harassment. These practices can have a detrimental effect on your mental health and may even lead to suicide attempts.

There are various methods to mitigate the negative effects of social media, but ultimately it’s up to each individual to find what works for them.
