Light Therapy for Pain Relief

Light therapy is becoming more and more widely recognized among healthcare professionals and patients. This form of photobiomodulation, which harnesses the energy of sunlight to treat various conditions and ailments, has been demonstrated to have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect on various illnesses.

Research has recently indicated that light therapy can effectively reduce pain response to mechanical and heat trauma in both sham-injured as well as injured animal models.

Researchers found that low-level light therapy was effective at relieving pain due to its modulating effect on sensitization. These findings may explain why low-level light therapy is becoming an increasingly popular analgetic treatment for both acute and chronic pain conditions.

Based on these results, low-level light therapy should be further explored for its potential effectiveness in treating fibromyalgia and other primary pain syndromes. Furthermore, it could potentially serve as an alternative to analgesics like opioids when managing postsurgical discomfort.

Green light reduces pain by resetting the circadian clock and altering melatonin production, stimulating energy, and increasing levels of enkephalins (pain-relieving molecules) in the eye. This occurs through photoreceptors in the retina which are sensitive to green light and send signals to the brain.

Additionally, it increases endogenous opioids–a natural pain-relieving molecule found within the body–and alters serotonin levels.

Pain comes in many forms, from nociceptive to functional. Some of these are related to specific injuries or physical conditions while others are more diffuse and can occur anywhere on the body.

Some types of pain can be caused by nerves buried deep beneath the skin. To alleviate these symptoms, researchers at Fudan University in China have discovered that they can influence these pain-triggering receptors by injecting a light-sensitive chemical into mice with neuropathic pain and then flashing them with near-infrared (NIR) light.

The NIR light caused nerve endings on the surface of the skin to retract, making them less vulnerable to stimulation. As seen in the image above, this resulted in a decreased pain response for mice after treatment – as evidenced by their reduced activity after being exposed to NIR light.

This study is the first of its kind, but it offers significant implications for pain sufferers and could spur further research on the role of green and red light exposure in pain reduction.

In addition to relieving pain and inflammation, red and NIR light therapy have been found to promote cell growth, repair damaged tissues, stimulate cellular metabolism – ultimately aiding the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

It’s essential to note that light therapy works best when applied several times per week for several weeks or months at a time. Not only does it help with pain relief, but it’s also an excellent way to improve overall health, boost moods and energy levels.
