Lower back pain occupational therapy can be an effective treatment for relieving the effects of chronic pain. Not only will it help shorten your discomfort, but it may also prevent future episodes from reoccurring.

Low back pain is often classified as non-specific, meaning its exact cause cannot be determined. Fortunately, most cases of back pain can be effectively treated through Physical or Occupational Therapy.

If you’ve recently experienced back pain or your symptoms are beginning to recur, it’s time for treatment. Your Physical or Occupational Therapist at Therapy Specialists Inc will conduct a comprehensive exam to identify the source of your discomfort and create a treatment plan that will bring relief.

At the start of your therapy regimen, your Physical or Occupational Therapist may use techniques such as ice, heat, ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, interferential current, laser, and needling (acupuncture) to reduce back pain and increase comfort. These modalities will be employed temporarily in order to reduce symptoms and return you back to regular activities.

Your Physical or Occupational Therapist can also teach you about your back’s anatomy and how it typically responds to certain activities. This understanding will enable you to recognize its limitations, as well as how safely you can engage in different tasks like bending, lifting, and sitting.

On your initial session, your Physical or Occupational Therapist may suggest exercises to increase flexibility and range of motion. These may include stretches, strengthening exercises, or stability training. You have the option to do these exercises independently or with assistance from your therapist depending on your level of activity and pain tolerance.

Your Physical or Occupational Therapist may prescribe exercises in addition to self-care activities like bathing and showering to help prevent future back injury flare-ups. Your therapist will instruct you how to perform these tasks safely so that the pain does not return.

Your therapist will also instruct you on how to position your spine for maximum safety and comfort during exercise or other strenuous activity. They may suggest that it’s healthy for your back to move in various postures, such as slouched sitting or lifting objects with a slightly rounded back, but they’ll show you proper body mechanics and ways to conserve energy during recovery from these positions.

In addition to these core skills, your therapist will teach you how to perform daily activities correctly so that you can continue enjoying life after your lower back injury or pain is gone. This includes learning how to utilize larger joints in movement, conserving energy by balancing work and rest, as well as listening to your body’s pain signals to avoid overexertion or overuse.
