Magnetic Therapy For Pain

Magnetic therapy is a medical practice that utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate neurons in the brain. It has been approved by the FDA to treat major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as pain from certain migraine headaches.

Magnetic stimulation devices come in many varieties, the most popular being TMS (pulsed electromagnetic device). This type of device uses a small coil housed within an external box on the head to generate a magnetic field that penetrates into the brain and stimulates specific neurons. TMS has proven safe and effective treatments for various neuropsychiatric conditions like major depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic headaches.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS), also known as spinal cord stimulator (SCS), is an alternative therapy that has proven successful for neuropathic patients who do not respond to pharmaceutical treatment. The most common use of SCS is for peripheral nerve entrapment in the lower back; however, it can also be employed for cranial neuralgia symptoms.

The GammaCore Sapphire is a noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) device developed by electroCore Inc. of Basking Ridge, NJ. This self-administered device sends electrical pulses to six branches of the vagus nerve on either side of the neck. It has been FDA-approved for treating episodic cluster headache in adults and is being tested as a preventative measure against recurrent migraines in younger patients.

A randomized controlled trial of 194 patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee found that wearing a static magnetic bracelet reduced pain compared to a placebo bracelet. However, it remains uncertain whether this improvement is clinically significant or simply an effect of placebo.
