Maryland Mental Health Statistics

Maryland is facing a mental health crisis and must invest more in treating people with disorders like anxiety, depression and substance abuse. At present, Maryland ranks 20th out of 50 states on measures related to mental health services and resources.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), more than one in five adults suffer from a diagnosable mental illness or coexisting substance use disorder. This includes conditions like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and mood and personality disorders.

1. Mental health condition, also referred to as mental illness, is a medical condition that causes individuals difficulty thinking, feeling, relating to others and functioning on a daily basis. Typically these issues begin during childhood without an apparent cause.

2. Maryland’s opioid epidemic has had a detrimental effect on mental health, particularly among children and young adults.

Opioid overdoses are the leading cause of death in Maryland and across America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Not only can an opioid overdose cause physical harm, but it may also result in mental distress or social isolation.

3. The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact on people of all ages and races, but it is especially severe among Black and Latino communities.

4. Many people in Maryland struggle to access mental health care, including children.

Despite an increasing need for services, Maryland’s number of providers has not grown significantly. Indeed, there are fewer psychiatric hospitals and specialty clinics than ever before–ten years earlier!

5. Maryland faces a mental health crisis due to several policy changes, including limited access to out-of-state residential treatment centers and low reimbursement rates for services rendered.

6. It is deeply concerning that children in the state of Washington do not receive the services necessary to stay healthy and contented.

7. There are not enough therapists to treat all children who require it.

8. One in eight children suffering from serious mental health issues do not receive the appropriate support to stay healthy and contented.

10. Anxiety and depressive disorders are prevalent, yet treatable.

11. Nearly one in every five adults experiences a mental health condition each year, and nearly 40% of Marylanders report having experienced such issues at some point during their lives.

12. Anxiety and depressive disorders are the two most widespread mental illnesses, yet lack of access to behavioral healthcare services often prevents those affected from receiving the assistance they require.

13. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in America.

14. Over 190,000 Marylanders reported having serious thoughts of suicide within the past year.

15. In 2021, more than 48,000 people committed suicide.

16. More than half of all suicides occur among adolescents and young adults.

17. Mental health is not just an issue for adults; it affects children and families as well.

18. Maryland needs to give more attention and resources to combating the youth mental health crisis.
