Men’s Mental Health Month

June is Men’s Mental Health Month, an opportunity to emphasize the significance of emotional and mental wellbeing among men. This nationwide observance encourages boys, men, and their families to make healthier lifestyle decisions; however, it should be remembered that mental health affects all men year round.

Men tend to be less likely to seek treatment for mental health problems than women are, possibly due to social pressures, cultural norms and beliefs which make it difficult for men to reach out or discuss their emotions. This could be a result of how difficult it can be for them to reach out for assistance when needed.

However, mental health disorders in men are more prevalent than many people realize, particularly when men face significant life obstacles such as financial troubles, legal troubles or the death of a family member. Fortunately, treatments like psychotherapy can help men overcome these difficulties and lead a more normal life.

Depression and anxiety are two of the most prevalent mental health disorders among men, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. If left untreated, these illnesses can lead to serious medical complications like heart disease or stroke.

Men who experience depression commonly exhibit sleeping excessively or inadequately, low energy, difficulty concentrating and feelings of hopelessness. Unfortunately, these signs can be subtle and go undetected until the condition becomes severe. Furthermore, if symptoms continue to worsen or last more than six months, depression could progress into a full-blown mental illness.

Suicide rates are significantly higher among males than females, with men experiencing a four times greater suicide rate than women. Furthermore, black and Latino men experience the highest suicide rates of all.

Mental illness in men has been known to be closely connected with other health conditions like drug abuse and alcohol dependence. That’s why it’s essential for them to receive treatment and learn how to manage their symptoms in order to avoid developing more severe health issues down the line.

For those suffering from depression or other mental health disorders, taking psychiatric medication is an option. This medication may help control symptoms such as anxiety and depression, while also relieving pain.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), men most effectively treated for mental illness with a combination of medications and psychotherapy. Men and their family members should receive regular screenings for mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and more. A mental health professional can suggest the appropriate treatment plan based on each individual’s individual needs.
