Mental Health Examples

Mental health examples encompass a diverse range of disorders that impact our emotions, behavior and psychological wellbeing. They are all caused by an intricate combination of individual, social and structural stresses and vulnerabilities.

Some mental health disorders are genetic, brain chemistry, life experience and environmental exposures before birth. Other potential causes may include having a family history of mental illness, traumatic events or other physical or medical problems.

Common mental health disorders include anxiety disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People suffering from these conditions experience intense fear or worry that disrupts their daily lives.

Diagnosing mental health conditions requires a doctor to conduct an extensive physical exam, psychological evaluation and series of laboratory tests. They will also inquire about your symptoms and experiences as well as whether there is any family history of mental illness in your family.

Anxiety Disorders: Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety and agoraphobia are some of the anxiety disorders. They can significantly impact your ability to work, study, sleep, eat and have normal relationships with others.

Depression: Depression is one of the most widespread mental health disorders and manifests when someone feels depressed, hopeless and lacking energy. It can be treated through medication, psychotherapy and/or lifestyle modifications.

Psychotic Disorders: Psychotic disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions that cause distortions to awareness and thinking, such as hallucinations or delusions.

Eating Disorders: Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions that cause extreme feelings, attitudes and behaviors related to food and weight. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
