Founded in Australia by Betty Kitchener and Tony Jorm, MHFA has since spread internationally – particularly to the United States where it’s being funded by local, state and federal governments at an exponential rate.

Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid are both 8 hour courses that teach risk factors and warning signs of mental illness and addiction, how to provide initial help, and how to guide someone toward appropriate care. A five-step action plan is included which assists those facing a crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources.

Higher Education Mental Health First Aid is a separate course tailored towards students at college and university campuses, who are often the most vulnerable when faced with mental health or substance use challenges. As an extension to the core Adult Mental Health First Aid course, this additional instruction equips faculty, staff, and students with the tools needed to assist each other when faced with such mental health or substance use difficulties.

All MHFA courses are 8 hours long, provide hands-on learning experiences, an overview of local resources and an extensive resource manual. Furthermore, the curriculum has been enhanced with expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care.

Mental health first aid training can be obtained free of charge to educators, education support personnel and volunteers. In addition to the standard 8-hour instructor-led course, there is also a two-hour self-paced online component available.

Supporting those in need is an integral part of being a good friend, colleague or manager – and this course offers practical and realistic ways to do so. Topics covered include common signs and symptoms, how to approach someone in distress, where to seek professional assistance and how to defuse tensions and derail a crisis situation.

Mental health and addiction are especially relevant to military service members, so this course dives deep into the unique cultural and familial difficulties Veterans and their families may face as well as how to combat any stigma that may accompany these issues. It will be invaluable for anyone working or supporting members of the armed forces, veterans, or their families.

MHFA offers training to first responders such as police officers, fire fighters, and public safety officials who often encounter individuals in potentially hazardous situations. This training takes into account their unique experiences and needs and teaches strategies that help de-escalate incidents without putting themselves at unnecessary risk.
