Mental Health Month 2021

Every May, mental health month is observed to encourage people to discuss their mental health and share resources. During this time, advocates and organizations come together to bring attention to the problems that affect millions of people.

Mental Health Awareness Month strives to raise awareness and eliminate the stigma attached to mental illness. This is essential, as people are more likely to seek assistance when they understand what’s ailing them and how best to handle it.

Throughout this month, people from across America join in events and fundraisers to raise money for mental health research. Some are organized by national mental health organizations while others are run by volunteers within their communities.

This year’s awareness month is “Back to Basics,” a theme designed by Mental Health America to provide foundational knowledge of mental health and illness conditions so people can recognize when their own wellbeing may require additional support or treatment.

In addition, people can become educated on the effects of stigma on their mental health. There are various steps they can take to help combat it, such as sharing stories, volunteering at local mental health organizations and getting certified in a mental health first aid course.

Request your governor or mayor to officially declare May as Mental Health Month in your state or city. On the Mental Health America website, you’ll find a toolkit with sample proclamations to get started.

Encourage your friends, family and community members to join you in raising awareness of mental health within your area by participating in a fundraiser or outreach event. Alternatively, create an inspiring blog or social media post where you can share your story of living with mental illness and encourage others to reach out for support.

A virtual community discussion about mental health can be an excellent way to raise awareness in your school or community, enabling everyone to join the conversation regardless of location. You could even invite a mental health professional to facilitate the discussion or answer any questions that arise.

Life can be challenging at times, whether it’s a major life change or just everyday struggles. That is especially true if you are dealing with mental health issues like anxiety or depression. But using #Tools2Thrive in your daily life can help manage these feelings and boost your resiliency.

Use the #Tools2Thrive worksheet to practice self-compassion for daily struggles and reduce tension by managing emotions such as anger or frustration. This is an essential step in maintaining mental health and avoiding stressors from spiraling out of control.

Be sure to reach out to your mental health provider or the Purdue University Counseling Center for additional support and advice as you navigate this pandemic.
