Migraine Treatment With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Migraines are a prevalent neurological disorder that impacts up to 38 million people worldwide. Unfortunately, they can cause significant disability for sufferers and often go undetected. However, there are numerous methods for managing migraines and reducing their frequency; such as lifestyle/trigger management, pharmacological treatment options, and preventive measures.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is an effective migraine remedy that may provide long-lasting relief for some sufferers. In an HBOT session, patients breathe in 100% oxygen at higher than normal air pressures inside a chamber, delivering it directly to their brains.

This therapy has been used to treat various medical conditions, such as stroke and cardiac disease, but it may also have some promise in treating migraines. Studies show that it’s safe, easy to use, and can effectively relieve migraine symptoms without the need for prescription medications.

Migraines can be caused by a variety of things, including changes in weather, certain foods and drinks, stress, hormones, alcohol and even sleep patterns. While the exact cause remains unknown, these symptoms include severe pain in the head and surrounding areas; blurred vision; dizziness; chills; nausea; light & sound sensitivity as well as neck & back discomfort.

Migraines cause the blood vessels in the head to dilate and swell during attacks, irritating nerve fibers that then release chemicals responsible for pain, inflammation and swelling. This enlargement can become a barrier to blood flow, decreasing brain tissue’s capacity for oxygen absorption – thus initiating the attack.

Though pharmacological migraine treatments have been developed and are generally well-tolerated, some patients still experience symptoms even after taking medications to treat the condition. Furthermore, migraines may cause other issues like nausea, fatigue, depression or slurred speech which may not be apparent without experiencing them firsthand.

To effectively relieve migraines, the most effective approach is to identify and address the causes of these attacks. For instance, if someone’s diet contains too many sugary or processed foods, then they should adjust their eating habits. Furthermore, those who have a family history of diabetes or are overweight or obese should be tested for glucose intolerance and encouraged to eat healthier meals.

History has it that oxygen inhalation through a mask has long been used to treat migraines and other chronic headache disorders. It has been demonstrated to be effective in both animal and human studies.

Oxygen has been demonstrated to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and boost immunity in both the brain and body. Furthermore, it inhibits peri-infarct spreading depolarizations as well as reduce cerebral vasoconstriction – believed to be a trigger of migraine headaches.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was conducted to compare high flow oxygen therapy versus placebo therapy for treating adult migraine. The primary outcome measured headache resolution after a certain number of migraine attacks, with an adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) calculated for all studies that included an aOR.

This review of research evidence indicates that high flow oxygen is not significantly superior to placebo in terms of remission of acute migraine. Nonetheless, further evaluation should be done on its effects on chronic migraine patients who are unresponsive to standard therapies.
