Music Therapy Jobs Houston Tx

If you enjoy music and want to use it to help others, a career as a music therapist could be for you. In this profession, you work with patients suffering from various illnesses and conditions like cognitive problems, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, geriatric care, depression, stress, respiratory issues, substance abuse issues and more.

Most individuals interested in music therapy earn a bachelor’s degree from an AMTA-approved university. This degree program imparts professional competencies related to music therapy and related coursework from science and psychology. These abilities include planning and executing musical interventions/techniques; assessing patient progress; documenting client outcomes; developing therapeutic relationships; as well as adhering to ethical and practice standards.

Once a bachelor’s degree is earned, students are eligible to take the national certification exam administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). This credential verifies professional competence and allows you to practice music therapy in most states across America.

You can earn a master’s or doctoral degree in music therapy from any college that offers such degrees. These degree programs typically take four or more years to complete and require 1200 hours of clinical training as part of your coursework.

As a music therapist, your duties include working with patients to establish goals and preferences for treatment, create and implement musical interventions and techniques that meet those objectives, as well as offer education and guidance. Depending on the setting, these could include songwriting, lyric analysis, music improvisation, adapted lessons on musical theory or neuroscience-related music interventions (which explore how the body and brain responds to music), as well as other activities designed to meet specific needs and promote wellness.

Some AMTA-approved universities offer an equivalency degree in music therapy for those with baccalaureate degrees from other fields. The program consists of coursework that meets the minimum educational requirements for a baccalaureate degree and includes a supervised internship. Upon successful completion of this equivalency program, you are eligible to sit for the national certification exam and earn the credential “Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC)”.
