New Paltz Music Therapy

Many turn to music for comfort during times of joy, sadness or loneliness. Additionally, music can be an effective healing tool for individuals dealing with PTSD, autism and other mental health challenges.

The SUNY New Paltz Department of Music offers a Master of Science in Music Therapy program. This 48-credit degree leads to licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) through the State of New York Office of the Professions.

This esteemed program has earned recognition from the American Music Therapy Association, National Association of Schools of Music and New York State Department of Education. It provides specialized courses relevant to music therapy practice.

Students taking MUS 328 Inclusive Conducting and Arranging, MUS 345 Psychology of Music, or MUS 405 Community and Group GIM Techniques will gain an understanding of the biology and psychology behind why people enjoy music so much.

They will also participate in a fieldwork course, working with clients across different settings. This gives them invaluable experience working in clinical settings and an understanding of how music can enhance quality of life.

The Department of Music also offers a doctoral program in music therapy, which prepares graduates for a career in this field. This rigorous curriculum has been approved by the American Music Therapy Association and leads to students being eligible to apply for doctorate degrees within this field.

In 2021, 12 students graduated from SUNY New Paltz’s music therapy graduate program – making it the third most sought-after school for this degree nationwide.

Students majoring in music therapy have the unique opportunity to embark on a year-long exchange program at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music. As a music therapy major, you will collaborate closely with your faculty advisor and mentors throughout the duration of your studies. Furthermore, you will receive extensive clinical training as well as being required to complete a culminating project.

The program is designed to prepare you for a career in musictherapy and help you obtain licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT). In order to qualify, you must pass an extensive professional licensing exam and accrue 1500 clock hours of supervised clinical experience within New York state.
