A holistic approach begins by listening carefully to a person’s needs and goals. This may involve discussing medical history, reviewing medications, or asking about daily life habits. From this data they will create a treatment plan and set of objectives.

The therapist will then strive to implement these goals into a person’s life and assess how well they are meeting them. If there are areas for improvement, they will discuss them with the individual and suggest adjustments to their treatment plan.

This can be a highly individual process and may involve some trial and error. The therapist must remain patient and determined in helping their patient reach their objectives.

Occupational therapists (OTs) can also aid with the transition into a new lifestyle, which may be challenging when an illness or injury has left you feeling vulnerable and disconnected from your community. They offer training and advice on dealing with such issues as finding ways to maintain independence for longer or managing depression.
