OCD and Anxiety Treatments

OCD is a very serious mental health problem that affects up to 2% of the population. It is characterized by repetitive behaviors that often involve rituals. These can include excessive cleaning, endlessly checking appliances, or obsessive organizing. The symptoms can be quite debilitating, however.

While many people with OCD will live a fairly normal life, others will experience severe anxiety. There are a number of treatments available to help individuals manage their condition.

One of the most effective treatments is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapy involves identifying and modifying negative beliefs. Using this strategy, patients can achieve a significant reduction in their symptoms.

Other effective treatments include Exposure and Ritual Prevention (ERP), a technique that focuses on controlling obsessive thoughts, while teaching adaptive responses to the anxious thoughts that arise.

In addition to its use in the treatment of OCD, the ERP has been shown to be helpful in treating related disorders, including body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, and excoriation.

Regardless of which type of treatment a patient chooses, it is important to remember that the symptoms of OCD and anxiety will often change with time. A person may also find that their symptoms change due to a traumatic event.

A traumatic event can be anything from a loss of a job to a death in the family. Traumatic events are not only highly stressful but can also be very triggering.

As such, identifying and eliminating the source of the symptom is important to gaining a better understanding of the condition. Another good way to do this is to explore comorbid disorders, which can be useful in etiologic investigations.
