Ochsner Mental Health

Mental health is an integral component of our overall well-being. Left untreated, mental health problems can have detrimental effects on both physical health and relationships with others. Our psychological state is determined by a complex interplay of individual, social and structural stressors.

Estimates suggest that one in every five adults suffers from a mental illness, yet less than half receive treatment. Those affected may experience anxiety, depression or substance use disorders.

Ochsner Mental Health is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients and their families. Our highly trained psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health specialists strive to meet this mission.

Psychologists, nurses, psychiatric social workers and counselors offer comprehensive evaluations and care for a range of psychiatric disorders. Additionally, they offer assessment and therapy to individuals with chronic mental illnesses or medications that are causing emotional symptoms.

The psychiatric team at Ochsner works in close partnership with other departments to devise treatment plans that promote patient function and independence. We also act as advocates for our patients and their families within the hospital setting as well as in the community.

For patients requiring acute psychiatric hospitalization or outpatient treatment, we offer several inpatient and partial hospital programs staffed by a multidisciplinary team. These include general practitioners, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, recreation therapists, dietitians and mental health technicians as needed. Behavior treatment is guided by recovery-oriented principles which involves both patients and families in the therapeutic process.

We understand the debilitating nature of mental illness, leaving you feeling helpless and uncertain about the next steps. Our mission is to give you comfort in understanding your condition so you can receive the support necessary for lasting change in your life.

Virtual therapy is a convenient solution for patients who are too busy to make an appointment. Ochsner provides virtual therapy through their telehealth platform Ochsner Anywhere Care, which enables individuals to connect with licensed providers via secure video sessions from their computer or smartphone.

Healthy State of Mind: Ochsner’s podcast and video series on mental health is an excellent tool to educate people about the significance of their health, as well as how to maintain it. Topics range from better sleep habits to decreasing workplace toxicity through boundaries and work-life balance.

This program is built upon evidence-based interventions that have been shown to boost resilience, boost self-esteem and boost productivity. Hosted by Tracey Murry PhD and her co-host Kaitlyn Heckel, PhD, it features board-certified psychologist Tracey Murry as well as other expert guests.
