One Myth About Mental Illness

One myth about mental illness is the idea that those affected by it cannot contribute to society or be productive. This misconception is perpetuated through fear-based arguments, misleading media coverage and damaging stereotypes.

Contrary to popular belief, people with mental health problems can be just as productive in the workplace and community as other members of our societies. Employers report that those with these issues tend to be just as motivated, perform just as well, and have similar job tenures as their peers.

Most people with mental illnesses recover, though some may experience episodes that last throughout their lives. Nonetheless, the majority of individuals can manage their condition so they lead fulfilling and active lives – similar to the treatment of many physical illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease, which can be managed so they don’t disrupt daily living activities.

The stigma surrounding mental health challenges continues to make it difficult for those facing them to receive the support they require. At Park Nicollet, we want to dispel these myths so more people will reach out for assistance when needed.
