Ozone Therapy For Knee Pain Side Effects

Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease, is a progressive condition that destroys cartilage on the ends of bones over time, leading to pain and stiffness. Symptoms can be severe and significantly reduce quality of life; furthermore, it carries with it significant social and economic costs.

Ozone therapy is a new treatment for osteoarthritis (OA), which helps reduce pain, improve functionality and enhance quality of life.

Ozone is a naturally occurring gas composed of three oxygen atoms that has the ability to reduce inflammation and free radicals in the body. It has long been used in Europe for treating diseases like cancer and arthritis, yet only recently did it make its way over to America.

At the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting in San Francisco, a recent study demonstrated that ozone injections, while not perfect, could provide some relief to participants with knee osteoarthritis. The experiment compared 63 people who received 10 mL of ozone throughout the study period with 35 people receiving placebo injections.

This study evaluated the efficacy of ozone by testing pain levels, function and quality of life using timed up and go tests (TUGs). Evaluations began when the study began, after each fourth and eight injections, as well as eight weeks after the final injection.

Ozone has been the subject of several clinical studies and appears to be a promising treatment option for those suffering from knee OA who aren’t ready for surgery yet. Further research is necessary in order to determine the most appropriate dose and frequency of ozone injections for each individual, but in the meantime ozone may be the new go-to medicine for those suffering from this condition.
