Pain Reprocessing Therapy

Pain reprocessing therapy is an evidence-based therapy to assist individuals in managing chronic pain. The technique works by rewiring the brain in order to break free of fear and sensations which often form the basis of chronic pain conditions.

A pain reprocessing therapy session typically lasts an hour, and the therapist uses various techniques to help you process your feelings of discomfort. These may include mindfulness, reappraisal, and positive emotion generation.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to your feelings and sensations without judgment. This can be beneficial as it reminds you that pain does not have to be permanent; additionally, mindfulness helps recognize other things in life which could cause discomfort or anxiety.

Reappraisal is the practice of gently reminding yourself that your pain is not due to injury but rather a false alarm generated by your brain to protect you from danger. This type of experience is known as neuroplastic pain and occurs when signals in your brain are misinterpreted as dangerous threats when they are not.

PRT (prolonged-release therapy) can be highly effective at breaking the pain-fear-pain cycle, which is one of the primary causes of chronic discomfort such as back and neck discomfort, fibromyalgia, and recurrent headaches.

The therapy takes into account both pain sensations and their accompanying emotional reactions, such as fear, anxiety or disappointment. This differs from other pain therapies which aim at eliminating or suppressing pain sensations.

By focusing on pain sensations and their underlying emotions, a therapist can help you transform your perception of the discomfort so you no longer associate it with negative feelings like fear or anger. Eventually, the discomfort should completely vanish and you’ll be free to enjoy life again without any more suffering.

Studies have demonstrated that neuroplastic pain therapy produces results which last much longer than other pain therapies. It helps people suffering from neuroplastic pain feel less depressed, anxious, and hopeless about their condition; ultimately leading to more enjoyable lives in general.

Alan Gordon, a pioneering psychologist in neuroplastic pain research, created PRT as an approach to changing how you experience and interpret pain. The aim is to encourage greater curiosity about yourself and your body’s sensations so as to break free of the cycle of fear and misery that often underlies chronic pain conditions.

In addition to mindfulness, reappraisal, and creating positive emotions, the therapy includes somatic tracking – an exercise in paying attention to body sensations. Your therapist will guide you through this exercise at each session.

Recent research found that people who received 4-weeks of PRT experienced significantly less pain at the end of the treatment period than those receiving placebo or usual care. They also reported more positive thoughts and beliefs about their pain, while brain imaging demonstrated a reduced response to evoked back pain and increased resting prefrontal connectivity after therapy – effects which persisted even one year after completion.
