Promoting Mental Health at Work on World Mental Health Day 2017

Mental health is an integral component of overall wellbeing. It involves the capacity to think, feel and act in ways which are helpful and satisfying for us. When these aspects of our lives become unwell, it can lead to serious consequences.

Today is World Mental Health Day – an international day that brings awareness to mental illness and combats its stigma. This year’s theme is “Mental Health at Work.”

Promoting mental health in the workplace has never been more essential. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

Mental illness has a detrimental effect on people’s work, relationships and social life. Not only does it lower employee morale and productivity levels, but it can also cause burnout or other physical health issues.

Despite these grave consequences, many workers remain reluctant to discuss their mental health at work or seek treatment. They may fear that doing so will exacerbate their predicament or result in unfair treatment.

This attitude is detrimental to those suffering from mental illnesses, and may create an hostile work environment. In order to promote positive mental health at work, managers must be willing to take proactive measures to address the problem.

One example is an Employee Assistance Program, which offers counseling or benefits to employees who require support. Employers could also offer their staff members chances to participate in mindfulness or meditation classes.

Another effective way to promote mental health at work is by encouraging employees to volunteer. Volunteering gives people a sense of purpose and allows them to connect with others.

If you or someone close to you is struggling with mental health issues, it is imperative that they seek help immediately. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly one out of every four people worldwide suffer from a mental illness each year and that most cases can be prevented or resolved through early intervention.

It is essential to remember that mental illness can strike anyone at any time in their life and doesn’t need to be a permanent condition. Some symptoms of depression and anxiety are temporary and don’t necessitate medical intervention.

Never be embarrassed or afraid to talk about your mental health – no matter how embarrassing or frightening it might seem at times. Sharing your stories can help break down the stigma associated with depression and anxiety, providing encouragement for others to reach out for help when necessary.

Social media can be an excellent tool to raise awareness for mental health and reduce stigma.
