A report from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) identified several nondrug interventions that were considered effective and recommended in treating chronic primary insomnia. The authors concluded that the integration of mindfulness meditation resulted in significant improvements in insomnia symptoms, including total waking time (−55 minutes), SE (+9.08%), and NWAK (−0.9). As with other behavioral therapies, a plausible theory or analogy to sleep restriction supports patient compliance with the sleep schedule. Given the subjective nature of complaints about sleep disorders, a self-assessment is necessary in order to be able to adequately assess a person’s subjective sleep experience.
