PTSD and Anxiety Symptoms

PTSD and anxiety are closely related disorders, and the symptoms of PTSD and anxiety often overlap. Symptoms include feelings of intense worry, restlessness, and being easily frustrated. The symptoms may be triggered by traumatic memories, or they may be non-triggered. A therapist can help patients better understand their trauma and reduce PTSD and anxiety.

In addition to PTSD and anxiety, participants also reported high levels of depression, which was the most common co-occurring condition. Depression was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and PTSD using the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ). Occupational settings had a significant impact on the levels of symptoms. Participants working in nursing or care home environments had higher levels of PTSD and anxiety than those working in other settings.

To identify shared risk factors for PTSD and anxiety, four separate logistic regressions were performed. Participants were classified into two groups: those who met a threshold for PTSD but not for anxiety, and those who met a threshold for both PTSD and anxiety. Compared with the anxiety-only group, those who met a threshold for PTSD and anxiety were more likely to meet criteria for clinically significant mental disorders.

In the multivariable logistic regression analyses, three independent variables significantly predicted distress across all models. Those who had been redeployed, those who had caught COVID, and those who had a low level of social support from their communities were more likely to develop PTSD and anxiety.

During the first wave of the pandemic, a convenience sample of UK HCSWs completed an online survey. The questionnaire included self-report questionnaires to diagnose participants with PTSD and anxiety.
