Social Anxiety Medication

The initial antidepressants prescribed for social anxiety disorder are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Examples include paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and venlafaxine (Effexor XR).

SSRIs work by inhibiting serotonin transporter enzyme activity and may also boost serotonin levels in the brain, improving mood and relieving anxiety.

Other antidepressants and benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), may also be effective treatments. However, these drugs are sedating and carry the risk of dependence, so they should only be used if other treatments don’t work.

Cognitive behavior therapy and a support group are the two most popular non-medication treatments for social anxiety. These methods emphasize developing coping skills, such as learning to recognize and modify negative thought patterns.

Studies have confirmed that these strategies can be successful. Unfortunately, they tend to be expensive and require long-term commitment.

In some cases, your doctor may suggest combining medications and psychotherapy. Medication works faster to relieve symptoms while psychotherapy has longer-lasting effects.

Alternative therapies like meditation and yoga may be beneficial in managing social anxiety. Many people have reported that lifestyle changes, such as improving their diet and increasing physical activity, can also make a difference in their symptoms of anxiety.

It is essential to discuss your feelings with a healthcare provider so they can assist in finding an appropriate treatment. If you or someone close to you is struggling with social anxiety symptoms, seek professional assistance as soon as possible.
