Somatic Experiencing – Is it Illegal to Practice Therapy Without a License?

Somatic experiencing is a type of body-centered therapy that uses touch and movement to address mental health conditions. When combined with talk therapies, somatic experiences give people the chance to access their bodies and heal emotional trauma.

According to the National Association for Clinical Excellence, practicing therapy without a license is illegal in most states. If someone attempts to practice somatic experiencing without an accredited license, they could be arrested; however, many therapists who use somatic techniques do have credentials.

Studies have demonstrated that somatic therapies can effectively reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression. Furthermore, it has been known to enhance academic or occupational performance as well as boost self-esteem.

If you need assistance with trauma or other mental health concerns, finding a therapist who specializes in trauma treatment is recommended. You can search for one through your health insurance provider or asking other medical professionals. Alternatively, use therapy-finder tools to connect with practitioners nearby.

Somatic therapists usually offer sessions a few times a week over an extended period. They may combine talk therapy and somatic approaches such as titration or EMDR according to each client’s individual needs and goals for healing. Some therapists even employ multiple methods of somatic experiencing like massage, tai chi or yoga in addition to these common ones.

Somatic therapy offers some advantages, but some people may find the approach uncomfortable. Physical touch used by somatic therapists can be triggering for those who have experienced sexual abuse or physical assault in the past. Some therapists may opt not to use physical touch during sessions instead using other types of bodywork or touch techniques instead.

Having a certified therapist certified in somatic experiences can make the therapy process simpler. Many schools offer certification programs for this specialty, though the process involves study, research, hours and practice. It isn’t necessary to hold an advanced degree to become a therapist with expertise.

No college degree is necessary in order to become an experienced somatic therapist; however, some individuals choose to study somatic experiences while in either their bachelor or master’s program. Some schools even offer concentrations on this topic within their counseling department.

In order to become an accredited somatic therapy practitioner, you must possess some experience and education in the field of psychology or mental health. You can gain this expertise by working in an academic setting, volunteering for a nonprofit organization, or participating in training programs offered by accredited somatic therapy schools or private colleges.
