Somatic experiencing is a body-oriented method for healing trauma, stress disorders and emotional wounds. It utilizes various body-focused techniques like sound, touch, mirroring, movement and breathwork in order to release any trauma stored within you and help you move forward with life.

Contrary to traditional therapies, SE does not require clients to relive their trauma. Instead, they are taught how to become aware of their physical sensations and compare them with feelings of relaxation or restfulness.

Clients who can relax their muscles and mind are able to release trapped energy in their bodies. When this relaxation isn’t possible, it may lead to intense, negative feelings like anger.

Therefore, it is essential to seek out a professional with expertise and experience in somatic experiencing. Some practitioners prefer working with clients of similar age or gender, while others have specialized areas of interest.

The therapist will guide the client through breathing exercises and meditation to help them process trauma. They may also use a technique called “resourcing,” which allows the body to access more comfortable feelings.

These practices can be especially helpful for individuals suffering from anger issues due to trauma. They help the client release the negative energy trapped within their bodies and break the cycle of defaulting to anger as a survival mechanism.

Somatic therapy has been proven to be successful in treating a variety of mental health and behavioral issues, as well as those who have suffered trauma. It often works in combination with other forms of therapy like cognitive behavior therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy.
