Somatic Movement Therapy PTSD

Somatic movement therapy ptsd is an alternative form of trauma healing that addresses both body and mind. The purpose is to reduce chronic tension and release painful emotions. This type of therapy is often utilized by mental health professionals, particularly those specializing in trauma work.

Somatic experiencing (SE), a new therapeutic approach for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), encourages you to revisit and process the traumatic memories or experiences that trigger stress activation and learn techniques for decreasing it through body awareness and various techniques. In this type of therapy, a therapist guides you through each memory while you focus on its bodily sensations as you discuss it. You may be asked to sequence these sensations such as tightness or trembling in the chest or throat during recall of these memories.

SE stands out from other forms of therapy because it doesn’t require a full recounting of the traumatic event. Instead, you’ll engage with memories that cause high levels of stress and learn ways to reduce them through body-centered practices like breathing, relaxation and mindful movement.

A randomized controlled trial found that participants who participated in SE experienced significant improvements to their posttraumatic symptoms and depression levels.

To receive treatment, you’ll need an individualized program tailored to your physical and emotional requirements. Your therapist will meet with you first to review your mental health history, set goals and expectations for the therapy, then begin working together in a safe space to explore how somatic experiences may be impacting your life.

Your therapist will begin by teaching you about the autonomic nervous system and its connection to traumatic events. This understanding is vital for understanding why certain memories trigger certain bodily reactions, as well as why restoring calm in your life can be so therapeutic.

You’ll also gain insight into the process of processing your trauma and how to safely move through it. This is essential, as trauma can cause the nervous system to remain stuck in survival mode. When this occurs, you may experience physical symptoms like fatigue, sleep disturbances and poor eating habits.

During the initial sessions of somatic experiencing, your therapist will teach you a number of body-centered practices to enhance self-awareness and reduce PTSD symptoms. These include titration – tracking bodily sensations as you recall traumatic memories; sequencing – paying attention to when body sensations arise in sequence; and breath work – helping the nervous system relax and release stress hormones.
