Somatic Relational Therapy for Trauma Healing

Somatic relational therapy is an evidence-based model of trauma healing that uses the body as a tool for change and recovery. It addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of trauma by encouraging clients to explore their body’s response in order to better comprehend and resolve it.

Somatic psychotherapy can be an effective intervention for trauma recovery, often combined with cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). This approach seeks to reduce stress, decrease negative symptoms, improve moods and self-regulation through exploration of sensations, emotions, and behavior within the body.

In SE, the primary objective is to alter a client’s stress response by recognizing and treating dysregulated arousal in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), commonly seen in relational trauma that can negatively impact caregivers’ capacity to meet children’s safety and emotional developmental needs.

Due to this, SE emphasizes bottom-up processing of arousal and emotion – focusing on the body’s sensory and motor responses rather than a client’s cognitive experience. This contrasts with CBT which prioritizes attention on both cognitive and emotional experiences.

By offering somatic resources such as breathing, deep connection and touch to their clients, the therapist can help them return their nervous system to a more relaxed state of calmness. These might include elements from their own practice or guided meditation that are tailored specifically for each client’s individual needs.

A therapist can also help the client uncover and explore their own somatic resources, which may be tied to trauma-related stories. Doing this allows them to work with unconscious repression processes and gain a better understanding of their own emotional experience.

During sessions, the therapist can help the client revisit and re-experience their trauma in a safe space. They may also work to identify and release any bodily sensations connected with it such as shaking, shivering, crying, or feeling overwhelmed.

Collaboration and individual attention will be provided, so that clients feel less overwhelmed by the traumatic event and more capable of processing it. The therapist may use various techniques to address different aspects of trauma including physical tension, breathing techniques, grounding exercises and mindfulness-based approaches.

Facilitating this, the therapist must learn how to effectively respond to threat responses and navigate different trauma stories. These skills can be applied both to the client’s story as well as the therapist’s narrative, providing for a more holistic approach to trauma healing and recovery.

Somatic relational therapy has the potential to be effective for many issues, and it has even been known to aid people in healing from PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. Unfortunately, research into its effectiveness has been limited due to insufficient sample size and methodological rigor in existing studies.
