Somatic Therapy and Its Founder

Somatic therapy is a holistic approach that brings together mind, body, and spirit in healing. It can be challenging to decide if somatic therapy is right for you, but if you have had traumatic events in your life and find it difficult to regulate emotions, this therapy could be beneficial. It has the potential to address a range of mental and emotional health issues; especially those who have endured abuse or neglect as children.

Somatic Experiencing is a type of body-centered psychotherapy that attempts to release the fight or flight energy stored in the body after trauma. This compressed survival energy can have an adverse effect on the brain, impairing one’s capacity for thought control and emotional regulation.

To reduce stress, the key is to let go gradually and reintegrate it back into your nervous system. This involves tuning into your autonomic nervous system, learning to recognize when your body signals distress, and gradually allowing those feelings sensations to fade away.

Therapists trained in somatic experiencing can assist you with the release of trauma symptoms by helping you practice these techniques during a safe environment of therapy. Your therapist will watch for small movements that indicate your body’s reaction to trauma and provide encouragement to safely ride these feelings out so that healing can take place.

Somatic therapy requires commitment and openness about your trauma experiences. Finding a trusted, compassionate therapist who will support you throughout this journey is essential.

You should also be open to receiving touch from your therapist, as this is sometimes included in somatic therapy. While you should feel comfortable with this practice, make sure they have received specific training in this technique before beginning the session – particularly if you have been the victim of sexual assault or other forms of physical abuse.
