Symptoms and Treatment of ADHD

A healthcare provider may diagnose ADHD based on a detailed history of symptoms from both the child and parents, observations of their behavior in school or other settings, and psychoeducational testing. For children, this diagnosis is usually made by either a pediatrician or child psychiatrist.

Individuals with ADHD typically struggle with attention issues and have difficulty planning, organizing and managing tasks. They have difficulty paying attention to details, are easily distracted, and forget things.

These difficulties can impact home, work and social life alike – including schoolwork and friendships. Furthermore, ADHD causes stress and disruption to relationships as well as poor job performance or even loss of employment.

People with ADHD typically receive medical or behavioral treatment. Medication can help reduce symptoms by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Medications fall into two main categories: central nervous system stimulants like atomoxetine or Strattera; non-stimulants like Guanfacine or Intuniv; and other medications. Doctors prescribe medications based on your response and the dose needed to control symptoms.

Your healthcare team should visit you periodically to monitor and adjust the dose of your medicine, as well as to make sure there are no complications with its use. Additionally, keep in touch with them if there are any questions or issues.
