The Institute of Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is an integrative form of mental health care that utilizes physical and emotional exercises to address various issues, such as trauma and depression. It has proven to be both effective and accessible, being recognized by the European Association for Psychotherapy as a mainstream branch of psychotherapy.

Finding a somatic therapist in most major cities is relatively straightforward. Some are certified massage therapists who also do therapy, while others are licensed marriage and family therapists (MFTs) or psychologists. You may even have the option to see one online via telehealth, so do your research beforehand and read reviews online before booking an appointment. The best way to locate the right therapist for you depends on where you live; to do this successfully, research the area you live in and check online reviews beforehand.

The institute of somatic therapy is a clinical and educational center that seeks to bring the benefits of somatic therapies to as many people as possible through professional training, public education programs, and clinical services. Their mission is to assist people in connecting with their bodies, emotions, and the world around them in order to enhance their quality of life.

Our faculty provides a variety of therapeutic approaches and are passionate about helping their clients gain greater embodied awareness, insight, self-awareness and healing in their lives. They draw from various disciplines such as Alexander Technique, Somatic Experiencing or Mindfulness Therapy to offer support.

Therapists trained in somatic approaches are experts at working with body sensation and the ways it can tell us about our emotions, thoughts and soul. By combining these practices with traditional counseling methods, our clients feel more grounded and free from anxiety, depression, PTSD or trauma that may be interfering with their daily lives.

We offer a Comprehensive Somatic Psychotherapy Training Program for counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers. We accept therapists with at least 200 hours of relevant mental health qualifications and are currently accepting applications for our 2024 course.

Our Somatic Experiencing Level One module equips practitioners with an understanding of body sensation and how it connects to the psyche. Participants will learn how to engage in safe, non-judgmental touch while becoming more cognizant of how feelings can be expressed through physicality. Furthermore, they’ll examine how core beliefs and family of origin dynamics influence their soma, mind, and relationships.

Level Two of our Somatic Experiencing program: This level explores the connection between body and emotions, teaching people how to access and integrate emotional experiences through compassionate touch and movement. This is an integral component of somatically experiencing one’s whole self, enabling people to heal from past hurts and discover new ways of feeling in the present moment.

The somatic process of learning to recognize and comprehend our own emotions gives us the power to make better choices in life, such as working more effectively as therapist, teacher, parent or partner. Furthermore, this practice teaches people how to take care of themselves and those they care about – which can have lasting effects on other areas of their lives as well.
