The Relationship Between Insomnia and Anxiety

If you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re more likely to suffer from stress and anxiety. Luckily, insomnia and anxiety are treatable conditions. It’s best to seek help from a doctor or therapist. Whether you use medication or natural remedies, there’s no shame in seeking treatment.

Insomnia and anxiety are highly comorbid disorders. This is not a new finding, but research has not been able to fully account for this.

To test the relationship between insomnia and anxiety, researchers sent an electronic survey to all first-year undergraduate students at a major Canadian university. Participants completed a variety of measures, including a measure of daytime sleepiness, a measure of perceived stress, and a multiple-choice quiz.

A multiple-variable analysis revealed that, while insomnia was not a stand-alone predictor of anxiety, it was a strong predictor of depression. Using a previously developed method, a mediation model was used to explore this relationship.

The most important finding was that insomnia was a strong moderator of the ominous (in this case, the one-o-one of anxiety) novelty. This is in contrast to prior findings, which found that insomnia was a cause of anxiety.

Unlike previous studies, however, the study was able to control for the overlap between anxiety and depression. While not all anxiety disorders have a similar prevalence of insomnia, the results showed that high- and low-intensity forms of insomnia exhibited comparable reductions in anxiety symptoms.

In addition to examining the relationships between insomnia and anxiety, the study also looked at the quality and quantity of sleep. The Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire-Mizan was administered to the participants. The score on the scale was graded on a 5-point scale.
