The supervisory relationship is an essential element of the music therapy internship process. A supervisor should be an experienced professional dedicated to their profession, knowledgeable of AMTA standards for supervision, and experienced in supervising many music therapy interns over time. Furthermore, they must have knowledge and understanding of the clinical settings where the intern will be placed so as to facilitate learning opportunities at that location.

An internship experience can range from working directly with clients to observing and assisting a credentialed music therapist in various settings. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and develop skills across many client populations and treatment facilities.

The music therapy internship is a crucial component of student preparation for the profession of music therapy. It gives them an opportunity to hone interpersonal and communication skills, conduct client assessments, create client-centered planning/intervention strategies, as well as offer personalized music therapy services.
