Treating Spasticity With Electrical Sound Wave Therapy

If you or a loved one is experiencing spasticity, sound wave therapy could be the solution. This non-invasive, nonsurgical treatment has proven successful for various conditions and is especially suitable for those unable to undergo surgery due to its non-toxicity and lack of pain or swelling.

Spasticity is the inability to control your muscles’ voluntary contractions, leading to pain, fatigue and muscle stiffness. It’s more common in children with cerebral palsy and can be treated through various methods such as injections of botulinum toxin, electrical stimulation and occupational therapy.

Studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Extracorporeal Shock Wave (ESW) therapy on post-stroke spasticity. These trials utilized both focused extracorporeal shock wave (fESW) and radial ESW.

Focused ESW utilizes electromagnetic, electrohydraulically and piezoelectrically generated waves with rapidly increasing pressure that penetrate tissue to a depth of 3 cm. Compared with full ESW, rESW is less invasive and more tolerable (Dymarek et al., 2014).

Radial ESW therapy has been shown not only to reduce spasticity, but it is also known to increase joint range of motion and gait pattern in neurorehabilitation. Furthermore, studies have suggested a positive effect on neuropathic pain, muscle tone and fibrosis (Manganotti et al., 2005).

The primary mechanism responsible for decreasing spasticity and increasing muscle stiffness is the production of nitric oxide (NO) by axons (Manganotti et al., 2012). Notably, NO has anti-inflammatory properties which may help stimulate your body’s natural healing processes.

Additionally, exercise increases blood flow which delivers essential nutrients to cells and flushes away waste and toxins from your system. This enhances natural healing processes in your body and improves quality of life overall.

This technology is safe for individuals of all ages and can be utilized to treat a variety of injuries and health conditions. It has proven particularly successful at treating issues relating to the spine, hips, and shoulders.

A recent study has demonstrated that ESW can significantly reduce spasticity in those with lumbar spinal cord injury. It may also be beneficial for those suffering from herniated disc, sciatica and back pain; additionally, it retrains the brain to stop sending signals which cause spasticity.
