What Are Anxiety Tics?

Anxiety tics are unexpected movements, twitches or noises that can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. They usually occur at random times and may be linked to stress, exhaustion, excitement or happiness.

They can occur at any age, though they tend to occur more frequently in children and adolescents. When these disorders are mild and do not cause major issues, treatment usually isn’t necessary.

Tics are generally not harmful and do not cause permanent brain damage.

If your tic is causing problems or you worry that it could get worse, see a GP as soon as possible. They can accurately diagnose the issue and offer helpful advice and support.

Tics typically occur as a reaction to an internal feeling known as a premonitory urge, which can be anxiety-related or not. You may feel compelled to finish the tic in order to alleviate or lessen its intensity.

You can learn to suppress the sensation or act differently instead. A therapist can assist with this by teaching you what causes a tic and then providing guidance through its progression.

Treatment for tic disorders can be highly effective and has a positive effect on those suffering from them. Cognitive behavioral therapy, for instance, helps individuals gain insight into their feelings and behaviors and reduces both frequency and intensity of their tics.

Medications can be prescribed to treat anxiety tics. They have proven successful at relieving stress-related tics by relieving symptoms and making them easier to manage. Additionally, medications have been known to control certain types of tics such as eye twitches or throat clearing.
