What Are Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks are intense feelings of intense fear and anxiety that come on suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere. They’re a common symptom of an anxiety disorder known as panic disorder.

Panic disorder is a condition in which individuals experience repeated panic attacks, often caused by similar situations or events. During these episodes, their natural “flight-or-fight” response is activated even though there’s no actual threat present.

Panic attacks can strike at any time – while shopping, watching television or sleeping. Symptoms such as chest pain that lasts in the mid-chest area, rapid heartbeat and feelings of fear or dread will occur.

Other symptoms of a panic attack may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, sweating and an overall sense of weakness or exhaustion. In most cases, symptoms will peak within 10 minutes and last no longer than an hour.

Panic attacks can affect people of any age, but they often begin in adolescence. If left unchecked, these episodes could have devastating effects on a child or adolescent’s physical, emotional and social development.

It is vital for your wellbeing to seek assistance if you or someone close to you is dealing with persistent and severe anxiety, including the fear of having a panic attack. Treatment options may include psychotherapy (talk therapy) or medications.

The goal of treatment is to reduce your recurrent attacks by altering how you think and respond to triggers. In addition to medication, lifestyle modifications like getting enough sleep and exercising regularly may also be required for success.
