What Are the 3 Types of Insomnia?

In general, insomnia has three primary forms. Short-term or acute insomnia is typically a temporary issue and resolves itself within a few days or weeks.

Chronic insomnia, on the other hand, is a long-term issue that lasts more than 3 months. It could be caused by either an underlying medical condition or mental health issue; additionally, it could be an adverse effect of medication or another sleep-related disorder such as sleep apnea.

Dr. Nowakowski notes that people suffering from long-term insomnia may report a variety of issues in their daytime functioning, such as sleepiness, irritability, difficulty focusing or remembering.

Insomnia is a widespread issue that can have an immense effect on both your physical health and quality of life. A doctor can assist in finding the appropriate treatment to get you back to sleeping better.

Sleep problems often present for a short time, then return over time. However, if they persist longer than three months and become part of your regular life, it could indicate an underlying medical issue that requires professional assistance from a healthcare provider.

Your doctor will ask about your sleep habits and any medical conditions that might impact it. They may also request that you keep a sleep diary for several days or weeks so they can assess how well you’re getting enough shut-eye.
