Many individuals who experience anxiety struggle to conquer their fears and avoidance behaviors. Avoiding feared situations can actually exacerbate the sensation of fear, strengthening it even further.

The good news is that there are many effective therapies available to help people conquer their fears and phobias. These are typically behavioral therapies and aim at altering behaviors which cause anxiety. They may also use relaxation skills or medication for temporary relief from symptoms.

CBT is a type of psychotherapy that assists patients in recognizing the thoughts and actions that cause them anxiety. Through exposure therapy, these thoughts and behaviors are then changed into more adaptive patterns of thought and action.

Exposing a patient to their feared stimulus should usually take place with the presence of their therapist, and can either be imagined or in vivo. Studies have demonstrated that this technique is successful at treating various phobias, including those related to spiders and snakes.

Systematic desensitization is the most widely used technique in exposure therapy. This involves gradually exposing the patient to their feared object or situation while decreasing their anxiety level. The therapist begins with less anxious items or situations and progresses up the hierarchy until they become “desensitized” to them.

Throughout treatment, patients learn relaxation and mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and visualization to de-stress and soothe their body.

For clients suffering from phobias, therapy may involve instructing the client to visualize the feared object, activity or situation until it no longer triggers their fear response. This is then followed by exposing the patient to these same items or activities in real life so that they no longer feel the need to avoid them.

If the therapist determines that a patient is still feeling anxious after the initial session, they may try another type of therapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or family therapy. These approaches are more cost-effective than exposure therapy and often prove successful.

Recurrences of anxiety are an expected part of recovery and can be addressed as part of the healing process. A therapist can then work with the patient to develop strategies for dealing with their recurrences and predict when they might relapse.

Cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy have been known to be highly successful for relieving anxiety symptoms. Through these therapies, patients learn how to identify their fears and manage them more effectively.

The therapist can teach the patient relaxation and mindfulness techniques that will be highly beneficial in managing anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, they may encourage them to partake in activities known to reduce anxiety levels such as physical exercise and meditation.

The therapist should help the patient develop an attitude of acceptance towards their fears, reminding them that these are temporary. This is essential as it guarantees there won’t be a repeating episode in the future.
