What Can You Give a Dog For Pain Relief Over the Counter?

While many human pain medications are available over-the-counter, not all of these medicines are suitable for your furry friend.

If your dog is experiencing discomfort, it’s best to visit a veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. Your vet can also advise you on which medication would work best given their condition and level of discomfort.

NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin, can be used to relieve mild to moderate pain. They’re effective for treating conditions like arthritis and muscle discomfort.

Joint Supplements: Glucosamine and chondroitin help strengthen cartilage, protecting joints from damage. They also reduce inflammation and provide lubrication to the joint.

Hot and Cold: For comfort, apply a warm compress to an area that is sore or injured. Ice packs may also be wrapped around injured or swollen areas for more intense cooling.

Fish oil: Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA in fish oil can reduce pain for dogs suffering from chronic inflammation such as arthritis. They’re especially helpful for these canines.

Gabapentin: This drug works as an inhibitory neurotransmitter to control pain and anxiety in dogs. For your pup, give them between 2.5-5 mg per pound of body weight.

Hayes recommends that acupuncture needles can be an effective way to reduce pain in certain areas. However, he cautions that it’s not suitable for everyone and should only be used when prescribed by your veterinarian.
