If you or a loved one experiences sudden hearing loss along with tinnitus (usually in just one ear), it may be an idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss known as sudden deafness. They can examine your ears to see if the problem may be caused by a condition they could easily treat, such as an ear infection or a buildup of earwax. If a cause for your tinnitus can be found, effective treatment can help improve your tinnitus — for example, removing earwax buildup can help. Many medications have been studied to treat tinnitus.

How do I stop the buzzing in my ears?

If tinnitus is particularly noticeable in quiet environments, try masking the sound of the tinnitus with a white noise device. You can also try a masking device that is inserted into your ear and works in a similar way to a hearing aid. For many people, tinnitus improves by treating the underlying cause or other treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making the tinnitus less noticeable. Noise-canceling devices can help muffle ringing, buzzing, or roaring by creating relaxing sounds to mask your ear noises.

You should see your GP if you hear noises such as buzzing, ringing, or buzzing in your ears all the time or regularly.

Will the buzzing of the ears go away?

You can help alleviate symptoms, for example, by learning about the condition and understanding that it is not dangerous. If you can hear your own heartbeat very clearly, it could be a sign that your tinnitus is caused by a blood vessel condition such as high blood pressure or blood vessel blockage. If you have pulsatile tinnitus, your doctor may be able to hear your tinnitus when he or she does an exam (objective tinnitus). While tinnitus can’t be treated right away, there are things you can do to alleviate the noise in your ears as well as the stress caused by ringing.

However, the longer these sounds last, it is significantly more likely that you are dealing with chronic tinnitus.
