The sounds of a crystalline singing bowl almost hypnotize you in a trance, in which you don’t have to follow a melody or find a melody in a sound, but simply be one with it. Brittany Simone leads sound meditations and breathing experiences in Manhattan and the surrounding areas. She completed the one-year, 290-hour sound therapy practitioner training at the Open Center’s Sound and Music Institute and studied with experts in the field, including John Beaulieu, Silvia Nakkach, and Pat Moffit Cook. She is a Reiki practitioner and restorative yoga teacher and continues her studies in yoga, sound healing, indigenous traditions, shamanic practices, and North Indian classical music.

What is sound therapy yoga?

The sound healer facilitates the experience, and sometimes the entire group participates with chants, mantras, or roll-oms. It may sound nice to just play any bowl, but proper sound healing training will help you understand what each bowl does to the body and adjust your offering accordingly from there. Miller agrees and says, “For many people, it’s a lot easier to let go in a sound bath than traditional meditation. Sound therapy may seem nonsense to the uninitiated, but an open mind and an open heart are most important to getting the most out of your session.

In general, a sound bath is a meditative experience in which those present are “bathed” in sound waves.

Is sound therapy legitimate?

I witnessed the booming sounds of Tarek Atoui’s hybrid sculpture performance Organ Within in Solomon R. The sound waves or vibrations produced by certain tools, such as gongs, tuning forks, and singing bowls, can actually change your brainwave frequencies. All these sounds and vibrations form a universal harmony in which each element, although it has its own function and character, contributes to the whole. Practitioners have documented clinical case studies that demonstrate the positive effects of sound therapy, but it is a relatively new practice in the UK, meaning that many of the claims are under-researched and unfounded.

Sound therapy has been used as a remedy in all areas of the human body for thousands of years. Another theory about the benefits of sound is based on the concept of “binaural beats,” or “brain entrainment,” which hypothesizes that listening to specific frequencies can synchronize and alter brain waves.
