Atmospheric, deep and calm Tam Tam.

What is a Buddhist gong called?

This category of gong is sometimes referred to as tamtam to distinguish it from intent gongs, which give a tuned note. In Indonesian gamelan ensembles, some bossed gongs are deliberately built in such a way that they also produce a beating tone in the range of around 1 to 5 Hz. The vibrations, the feedback you get when you play the gong, probably won’t be the same as the next person. It has also been observed that some of the smaller Turkish cymbal manufacturers are looking into gongs, but more as a side business to their core business of hand-hammered cymbals.

A gong with an essentially flat surface vibrates in multiple modes, creating a crash tone rather than a tuned sound.
