What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy, also known as applied behavior analysis (ABA therapy), is one of the most successful interventions for children with autism. It involves identifying a specific goal or skill and using positive reinforcement to help individuals practice it.

During sessions, the therapist will use a process known as discrete trial training (DTT) to teach skills. This strategy breaks down an ability into smaller, manageable chunks so that individuals can master it on their own.

The ABA approach also involves collecting data during each session to monitor your child’s progress and identify strategies that work for them. The therapist will review this information and make necessary changes as needed in order to guarantee continued success.

In some cases, ABA therapy can be conducted at home or in a classroom setting. This type of setting provides your child with the therapy they require in a natural environment while also developing social and life skills.

A qualified therapist knows how to work with your child and set objectives that can be measured. After several weeks of treatment, you should see improvements in your child’s behavior.

New ABA therapy utilizes rewards instead of punishments to encourage compliance. Studies have demonstrated that rewarding a behavior actually decreases its likelihood to occur again when there’s no reward present.

If you’re thinking of pursuing a career in behavioral therapy, Regis College’s online MS program in applied behavior analysis is an excellent option. This program caters to students from various health services backgrounds and serves as the perfect launchpad for becoming an ABA therapist.
