What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

In the field of behavioral health research and therapy, new techniques are constantly being developed. One such technique is accelerated resolution therapy (ART). This type of psychotherapy combines several traditional methods and works to reduce traumas, negative images, and other stressors within a short amount of time.

Laney Rosenzweig, LMFT developed ART in 2008 and it was federally recognized as an evidence-based treatment model by the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices in 2015. ART combines elements such as eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), body scans, and image rescripting into one comprehensive treatment approach.

Psychotherapy is an efficient and successful treatment for PTSD and other trauma-related conditions. It may also help alleviate symptoms such as nightmares, anxiety, depression, and feelings of self-blame or guilt that stem from a traumatic experience.

It is essential to recognize that EMDR therapy can only address one issue or set of issues. If you have multiple concerns, working with a therapist who specializes in EMDR or another similar technique may be best.

Psychotherapy with a shorter timeline is particularly advantageous, as clients can see results within just a few sessions. Furthermore, this form of therapy grants clients more autonomy in the therapy process – ideal for those who feel uncomfortable discussing emotions or experiences.

ART uses bilateral stimulation and guided visualization to help clients process traumatic memories that have been causing them distress. This involves combining rhythmic stimulation of bilateral eye movements with guided imagery that promotes natural healing processes – especially useful for military-related traumas and combat traumas.

Rapid Recovery is a hallmark of accelerated resolution therapy, and many therapists report their patients can heal from traumatic events or fears in just one session. This also benefits the therapist, as they don’t need to experience secondary trauma from hearing about someone’s experience as they would if they were simply listening to the person speak about it.

Psychotherapy uses eye movements that mimic REM sleep, when the brain processes information. During an ART session, clients will follow a therapist’s hand with their eyes back and forth laterally, activating similar areas of their brain involved in memory retrieval and processing.

Art Therapy’s rapid eye movements allow clients to focus on an image while imagining it replacing a traumatic memory in their mind. This reframes and transforms those memories, helping them feel more positive about themselves while reaching their life objectives. It has proven a useful tool in helping clients move past past traumas and achieve new successes in the present.
