What Is Alternative Therapy?

Alternative therapy refers to a range of treatments such as massage, acupuncture and meditation that may be used for illnesses and health issues. Before beginning any type of alternative medicine it’s always wise to consult your doctor first.

Conventional medicine, also referred to as allopathic medicine or biomedicine, is the medical system that relies on drugs and surgery for treating symptoms and diseases. It’s practiced by many health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and therapists.

Traditional medicine, on the other hand, is an alternative medical system that relies on herbal and natural remedies to treat illness and disease. This form of therapy has been practiced for millennia in China and India where it has been practiced for thousands of years.

Integrative medicine, on the other hand, draws from science and works together with conventional medicine to treat diseases and illnesses. This approach not only takes into account patient preferences but also attempts to address mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of health.

Complementary therapies refer to treatments used in addition to mainstream medical care. For instance, a nurse might send a patient with skin rashes a letter encouraging them to purchase ointments and medication from her office.

Acupuncture is an alternative therapy that uses needles to stimulate nerve endings and promote relaxation and healing. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness for relieving pain, alleviating anxiety, as well as elevating mood.

Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation is another alternative therapy that may relieve chronic pain. This practice employs various techniques to manipulate the body, such as spinal manipulation and stretches.

Yoga is an alternative therapy that may be helpful for individuals struggling with their mobility or managing chronic pain and stress. It may also be beneficial to those dealing with mental illness or trying to break bad habits.

Hypnosis is an alternative therapy that may be beneficial for many. It involves deep relaxation where a person is put into a trance by their hypnotherapist. While generally safe, this therapy could pose risks to those suffering from severe mental illnesses or other serious conditions.

Art therapy is an alternative therapy that may be beneficial for many. It offers a great outlet to express feelings, and you don’t even have to leave the house! With art therapy, you have the option to work in either a group setting or on your own.

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) indicates that many Americans are turning to complementary and alternative therapies to improve their wellbeing. These can range from tai chi, yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation, massage therapy, music therapy and meditation – just to name a few!

Studies have indicated that alternative therapies can be effective for certain health conditions, such as arthritis and cancer. Unfortunately, they may cause side effects or interact with your standard treatment, making it harder to get better or decreasing its efficiency.
