What is Cognitive Therapy?

Cognitive therapy is a psychological treatment based on behavioral theories and it has been scientifically proven to be successful in treating various mental health conditions.

Cognitive therapy seeks to assist people in changing distressing thoughts and behaviours that may be causing them distress. This involves analyzing all aspects of your problem (thoughts, physical feelings and behaviors).

Your therapist will discuss the source of your issues with you and suggest strategies for resolution. They also have the capacity to teach new ways of thinking and acting that will be more beneficial in the long run.

Cognitive therapy does not have a set duration, but typically requires 6-10 sessions depending on the severity and length of time you have been suffering from your issue.

At your initial session with your therapist, you and they will devise goals for therapy. This helps them identify areas needing improvement and plan a personalized strategy over time to address those issues.

You will also be required to fill out a variety of standardized forms that will assess your current issue and any past difficulties. These could include a therapist-patient service agreement, HIPAA form (privacy forms), insurance information and medical history.

The therapist will utilize the Cognitive model to demonstrate how your thoughts can shape how you feel and act. This concept lies at the core of CBT, playing a significant role throughout treatment.
