What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy can assist families in improving communication, resolving conflicts and managing stressful situations. While it’s not always a quick fix for problems, family therapists can provide people with tools to tackle issues too big to solve on their own.

At sessions, a therapist helps each member of the family explore their feelings and behaviors. Additionally, they seek to comprehend when these issues began and how the family has attempted to address them thus far.

Family therapy may involve a range of methods, including behavioral and psychodynamic techniques. They might also employ strategies like modeling or role-playing to teach new skills and promote positive interactions.

Some therapists specialize in family therapy and can work with couples, children or members of an extended family. These therapists are commonly referred to as family therapists or marriage and family therapists.

Therapists usually work in private practice, although some are members of professional organizations like the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Furthermore, many health insurance plans provide mental health coverage for family therapy services.

During the initial sessions, a therapist must record each family member’s thoughts and behaviors. Doing this helps them build evidence to refute negative attributions such as, “The father doesn’t care about his daughter.”

Sometimes it may be difficult for families to accept that something they did or said has caused problems. A therapist might ask each family member to imagine how they would react if the situation were true, providing them with perspective on the matter and motivating them to alter their behaviour accordingly. This approach provides families with an alternative viewpoint on events which may help foster change within them.
