What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is the inability to sleep or remain asleep. It can have an adverse effect on your mental and physical wellbeing as well as relationships.

Everyone has experienced a night of difficulty sleeping at some point, but insomnia is distinct. Usually, it’s only an intermittent issue that can be rectified with medication.

Sleep is essential for our overall wellbeing, yet research shows that one third of Americans struggle with sleeping difficulties. These numbers are alarming, as lack of shut-eye can put you at greater risk for various serious illnesses and diseases.

Even if you experience occasional poor nights of sleep, it doesn’t necessarily indicate you have insomnia. But it can be helpful to identify what’s preventing you from getting enough restful rest at night.

Insomnia can be brought on by stress, illness or pain, as well as new changes to your life or work schedule – these are known as precipitating factors.

Medical conditions such as cancer, asthma, heart disease and diabetes can all lead to insomnia. People suffering from depression, anxiety disorders or other mood disorders are especially at risk for having insomnia.

Social and lifestyle factors such as changing work schedules or having sleep partners who disagree on when to go to bed can all lead to insomnia.

Insomnia can be treated with lifestyle changes and medications if necessary. These may include tranquilizers that help relax you and improve sleep, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), when appropriate. Insomnia can be challenging to treat, so it is wise to seek professional help from a mental health provider for assistance.
