What Is Massage Therapy?

The therapist may utilize other types of massage during the session, such as petrissage (rubbing or kneading of soft tissues), tapotement (rhythmic movements), compression and stretching. It’s possible to incorporate other healing methods like acupressure and applying warmed stones for extra benefit.

Reflexology – Reflexology is a gentle form of massage that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, and can be used for various issues like anxiety, headaches and pain relief.

Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy is a popular therapeutic practice that combines massage with essential oils. The therapist blends the oil with either a base oil (carrier or essential oil) before applying it directly on the client’s skin.

Myofascial release (myofascial release) – This manual massage technique targets the fascia, or connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs. It helps stretch this connective tissue in order to break up adhesions that may cause chronic pain, restricted motion or imbalances within the body.
