What Is Mental Health?

Mental health is a term that describes someone’s capacity to manage normal stresses and challenges in life. It can help an individual reach their full potential, enhance their quality of life, and contribute meaningfully to the community.

Mental illnesses come in many forms and each has its own symptoms. Common signs include depressed or anxious feelings, difficulty focusing or memory problems, changes to sleeping patterns or appetite and thoughts of death or suicide.

The intensity of a person’s symptoms can indicate how serious a condition is and require treatment. Some mental illnesses are severe enough for hospitalization or long-term care, depending on the individual.

It’s essential to recognize that some individuals with mental illnesses can recover with time and support from family, friends or professionals. This may involve working together with a therapist in order to develop better coping skills and learn to recognize signs of depression or anxiety.

Though there is no definitive definition of mental health, two main approaches can be taken: as a continuum or categorical distinction between healthy and unhealthy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a state of physical and emotional equilibrium. It can be improved through positive lifestyle modifications and an aspiration for purposeful living.

In general, there is disagreement on what constitutes good mental health and what does not. Nonetheless, most agree that making positive lifestyle changes and pursuing a sense of purpose in life are essential steps for anyone wanting to achieve optimal wellbeing.
