What Is Mental Health?

Mental health is a term that describes someone’s capacity to manage normal stresses and challenges in life. It can help an individual reach their full potential, enhance their quality of life, and contribute meaningfully to the community.

It is essential to understand that someone’s mental health can change over time depending on factors like genetics, environment and lifestyle. A stressful job, illness or challenging family circumstances may negatively impact someone’s wellbeing.

Everyone experiences worry or anxiety from time to time, but only a minority of people suffer from mental illnesses. These conditions disrupt one’s thought processes, emotions and day-to-day function. Those affected by mental illnesses typically need professional assistance and support in order to regain their abilities to lead normal lives again.

Many mental illnesses are treatable with therapy and medication. These treatments can reduce symptoms, enhance a person’s mood, and promote overall well-being.

Psychotic disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia can range in severity and be life-threatening.

In the United States, approximately 19% of adults have a diagnosed mental illness. Furthermore, many individuals living with this disorder also struggle with substance use disorders.

Mental illnesses come in many forms and each has its own symptoms. Common signs include depressed or anxious feelings, difficulty focusing or memory problems, changes to sleeping patterns or appetite and thoughts of death or suicide.

The intensity of a person’s symptoms can indicate how serious a condition is and require treatment. Some mental illnesses are severe enough for hospitalization or long-term care, depending on the individual.

It’s essential to recognize that some individuals with mental illnesses can recover with time and support from family, friends or professionals. This may involve working together with a therapist in order to develop better coping skills and learn to recognize signs of depression or anxiety.

If you are worried about your mental health, reach out to a trusted friend or family member. They can help determine if treatment is necessary and provide referrals to a therapist or counselor.

Though there is no definitive definition of mental health, two main approaches can be taken: as a continuum or categorical distinction between healthy and unhealthy. The continuum approach suggests mental health encompasses various states that vary from one extreme to another; on the other hand, categorical approaches view them as distinct entities with specific qualities.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a state of physical and emotional equilibrium. It can be improved through positive lifestyle modifications and an aspiration for purposeful living.

In general, there is disagreement on what constitutes good mental health and what does not. Nonetheless, most agree that making positive lifestyle changes and pursuing a sense of purpose in life are essential steps for anyone wanting to achieve optimal wellbeing.
