What is Somatic Breathing?

Somatic Breathing is an effective tool that can help people who suffer from chronic stress and trauma release their deeply held feelings. It does this by bringing conscious awareness to areas in your body which harbor unprocessed emotions that remain unsettled. This form of somatic therapy can be done individually with a qualified cognitive mind practitioner or in group sessions, classes and workshops led by trained facilitators.

One-on-one breathwork with a practitioner is ideal for developing body awareness, recognizing core patterns and permanently anchoring an open, healthy breath. Group breathwork or other forms of group work facilitated by multiple practitioners also provide excellent opportunities to effect change within a safe, supportive and intentional setting that uplifts all those present.

Holotropic Breathwork (HB) is a method of breathing that involves increasing your speed and rhythm while keeping your eyes closed. It often includes music to induce an altered state of consciousness similar to a dream.

Rapid breathing can feel overwhelming or unsettling, so HB practitioners are willing to back off if necessary. However, it is believed that this technique can lead to an altered state of consciousness – sometimes referred to as a pathway towards enlightenment. It has been employed in meditation and spiritual practices in order to increase awareness and improve mental health conditions.

Breathwork has been proven to be an effective tool for relieving anxiety and stress, particularly when combined with psychological therapy. Research has indicated that those who participate in a breathwork session experience higher levels of serotonin, endorphins, as well as reduced stress hormones.

Somatic breathwork teaches you how to connect to the natural rhythm of your own breath, which can be an incredibly relaxing and healing way to connect with yourself, your body and inner wisdom. This skill is essential for staying calm and healthy at any age.

This exercise is perfect for anyone with difficulty breathing properly. You can do it sitting or standing, simply place your hands on the bottom of your rib cage and watch how they narrow and lengthen during inhalation and exhalation.

Inhale deeply and hold for a second or two, then exhale slowly and gently. Repeat this process as often as you can. It may be beneficial to note your breathing at various points throughout the day in order to notice how it changes over time.

When practicing somatic breathwork exercises it is beneficial to focus on one chakra at a time or in succession. Doing this can unearth any blockages to your energy flow associated with that particular chakra. Focusing on each chakra may also be an effective way to release negative emotions associated with them such as insecurity or lack of empathy towards yourself.
