What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a type of mind-body exercise that can help relieve stress, chronic pain and other health problems. This therapy often works in combination with traditional talk therapy to enhance an individual’s mental wellbeing and healing process.

Somatherapists believe that physical symptoms associated with mental health issues can be caused by similar causes and treated in the same manner as other illnesses like diabetes or arthritis. By being aware of one’s physical signs, people can better comprehend their own emotions and feelings.

Body-focused psychotherapies draw from many spiritual and ancient healing traditions, such as Taoist and Indian practices. They require an acute awareness of one’s internal state, with healers trained in recognizing subtle shifts in physiology.

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a somatic approach to healing PTSD and other stress-related conditions developed by Dr. Peter A Levine after researching stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices and medical biophysics from multiple disciplines.

SE is an effective method for healing symptoms of trauma and chronic stress. The process requires charge/activation followed by discharge/deactivation, which are key elements in reaching resolution.

One of the key principles of SE is its focus on interoceptive and proprioceptive senses. Here, we pay attention to sensations a person feels in their body – known as “somatic markers.” Damasio refers to these sensations as “feeling traces,” which often have roots in traumatized memories.

We can use titration and the co-evocation of supportive and empowering interoceptive experience to de-potentiate these disturbing trauma-linked memories.

The therapist’s role is to guide their client through this process. This can be done using various techniques such as deep breathing, touch, imagery and movement.

In somatic therapy, a therapist uses their hands to guide someone through the process of reprocessing a traumatic memory. They pay close attention to any physical reactions that come up during this period such as clenched hands or changes in voice – all signs that the individual is working on processing their trauma physically in their body. This is the goal of somatic therapy and sets it apart from other types of therapy.
